As an educational advocate and consultant, my job is to help you understand and navigate the special education process at your child’s school. Each state, county, and school have their own way of running meetings, writing IEP/504 documents, and use their own various acronyms. The special education process can be confusing and stressful for any family, but especially daunting for military families moving from state to state. Sometimes a new state wants to initiate an entire new evaluation, challenge eligibility criteria, change services, etc. As you are moving your family to a new state, neighborhood, school, and all the things that come along with a PCS, collaborating with a new IEP team can be overwhelming. I can help!
Through my Educational Advocacy services I can attend meetings at the school with you to assist with understanding procedures, and get the most appropriate academic, behavioral, and social/emotional support for your student within the educational setting. These meetings can include but are not limited to: intervention/child study, initial referral, eligibility, and Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings. Direct advocacy services are available in the Camp Lejeune, NC area.
I also offer Educational Consulting. I can provide direct consultation with families to help you understand and navigate the special education process. Included in my Education Consultation, I can review your child’s student record. Items you may find in this record are: Evaluation results, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), and progress notes. Following this review, I can answer your questions and provide guidance. This can be conducted via email, phone calls, video calling, or in-person meetings.
My education, and professional experience make me uniquely qualified to provide educational advocacy and consultation services. I earned an Education Specialist Degree in School Psychology (2014) and a Master of Education (2012) from the School of Education at The College of William and Mary. I attended The University of Virginia for my undergraduate career, and majored in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. As a school psychologist, I am trained to understand the academic, social/emotional, and behavioral needs of students PK-12. I have conducted hundreds of comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations to assist in educational planning for students. I consulted with teachers regarding goals, strategies, and standards for Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Section 504 Accommodation Plan development for children with disabilities. I also conducted functional behavior assessments and created behavior intervention plans to increase pro-social student behavior. Prior to moving to NC, I worked as a School Psychologist in Prince William County Schools and was a 2017 School Psychologist of the Year nominee in the state of Virginia. As a licensed school psychologist, with 5 years of experience working in schools in two different states, my diverse experiences allow me to effectively collaborate with families to help you navigate the world of education. As an advocate, I want nothing more than to create an environment where the extraordinary potential of students can be realized; this requires parents being well informed, and included in the educational decisions of their children.
Personally, I have been married to my husband, Scott, for 7 years. We currently live in North Carolina at Camp Lejeune. We had our first baby in July 2018, which is one of the main reasons I’ve started this venture. I’d like to remain active in the field of education, while also being a mom. I am interested in working with families and students of various backgrounds. Specifically, military dependent children require additional support in times of transitions, deployments, and homecomings as these exclusive family factors may impact students’ daily life and academic abilities. I grew up in a military family, experiencing the challenges and opportunities associated with the ever-changing exposure to new environments, schools, cultures and varied customs. In my professional experience, military families sometimes struggle to receive, or maintain, educational services due to frequent moves and various state and local guidelines. I want to help military families receive, and maintain, the services that they are legally eligible for within the school setting.
